The long, long, long, long rap sheet of the man who shot two Edmonton RCMP

rehn
RCMP have identified Shawn Maxwell Rehn, 34, as the deceased suspect who shot two RCMP officers in St. Albert Saturday morning. Rehn, a resident of the greater Edmonton area, was known to police before Saturday’s shooting. (Edmonton Sun)

Shawn Maxwell Rehn (above) is believe to have gunned down two RCMP officers in Edmonton over the weekend. Both were wounded. One is not expected to survive his injuries, the RCMP said Sunday. Rehn is believed to have killed himself after the shootings.

There are now lots of questions — including some from the RCMP — why Rehn was not behind bars given his very, very, very long record of convictions and the very serious nature of the charges he was facing even before the weekend shootings.

My Edmonton-based colleague Joshua Skurnik has just obtained Rehn’s criminal record and a list of the charges that were already outstanding against him.

First, the convictions:

  1. Ah don’t you just love the Canadian (lack of) justice system? With this rap sheet this guy should have been in jail for the rest of his life but at least now he won’t be a problem from here on. So sorry for the mounties and their families and what they are going through at the moment

  2. I notice the times he was supposed to be in jail and some of the offences he committed don’t really jive. Did he actually spend any time in jail at all? Oct 2010, convicted and sentenced to 5 years less time served. That left 3 years but he was charged again 8 months later and got 2 years. Then 2 months after that, again.
Are these facts or things made up to make him seem worse than he really is? Is our system really that screwed up that criminals sentenced to jail time don’t actually have to go?

  3. Ahhh. soft on crime pays another dividend.

All those crimes, especially gun crimes, should have seen him locked up for a long time, at the time he was shooting the officers.

But lefty judges know better. Wish he was released into their neighbourhoods instead of into society to kill good people.

  4. A tragic and preventable loss of life but our justice system and all its judiciary failed.
This career criminal who clearly flouted the law numerous times was a walking timebomb but our defence lawyers and bleeding heart judges failed to address the dangerous nature of this psycho and we lost a fine RCMP Officer and nearly a second one. Makes all of us very angry…I have never seen so many angry people when all the facts were on the table. This man exhibited every dangerous quality of the worst kind and the judiciary failed to recognize it. Pure incompetence.
Who will step forward to admit this travesty of jurisprudence?

  5. The Harper government ” Tough On Crime ” now see what happened, all talk and BS from the Conservatives Party. I would never believe this party.

  6. I have to agree with Mr Windsor, did he ever do any time.
Every time he is suppose to be in jail he is committing more crime??????????
In 2010-10-26 he is suppose to be doing 3 years but in 2011-06-06 he gets another charge and 2 years, then 2 months later 2011-08-19 he gets another charge.
Are these crimes being committed while he is in jail?
    I really doubt it.
Can anybody explain this to the officers family?

  7. Even the cops admit criminals have more rights than victims. Total judicial incompetence. If this case doesn’t cause a overhaul of
the justice system, nothing will. Hope the judge who let this homicidal maniac out on the streets gets shown the door and then some.
