Liberals ask for cash to fend off Tory attacks

The Liberal Party of Canada has sent the following out to its members:

Trust the Conservatives to get attack ads out faster than they can deliver their promised stimulus funding. Unable to provide leadership himself, Stephen Harper has launched new ads attempting to divert attention away from his government's failures to fix the economy and to undermine the credibility of the one leader he knows can take his place – Michael Ignatieff.

Enough is enough. Please make a donation today and help Michael respond with a new kind of politics and hold this government to account.

Canadians deserve a government dedicated to solving problems, not partisan attacks. Our future depends on it. Michael's honesty and leadership have already begun to offer Canadians a sense of hope for a brighter future, with a government that will help Canada prosper and grow. Show your support and let's remind the Conservatives that their games won't work – Canada comes first.

Thank you,

Rocco Rossi

  1. If I remember correctly there was one of these letter a week (slight exageration) by the conservatives last year before the election.
Given the momentum the have in the polls this letter may actually work. It has for the conservatives.

  2. Please make a donation today and help Michael respond with a new kind of politics and hold this government to account.
Since when are counter attack ads a new kind of politics?

  3. Good for Rocco!
    Fight fire with fire.
Liberals cannot allows Harper & Co to allow Iggy to become Dion Redux.

  4. The Liberal party letter reads as follows:
“Canadians deserve a government dedicated to solving problems, not partisan attacks.”
So why does Mr. Ignatieff keep saying things like this:
“The Conservatives are the government. What does the government propose to do to fix the eligibility problems with EI?” (Hansard, QP, May 13 2009)
Or, as he was quoted in the Toronto Star http://www.thestar.com/article/578890
“We are in the opposition,” he explained. “We are not the government. It is the responsibility of the government to govern.”
One could browse through Hansard to find numerous examples of needless rhetorical flourishes and excessive finger-pointing MPs delight in. They certainly would not support the pretension the Liberals, or any other opposition party for that matter, are “dedicated to solving problems, not partisan attacks.”

  5. If Iggy had a platform and a vision, instead of another book tour, maybe voters would find something they could support.

  6. The fact is the ads are being sponsored and paid for by the Conservative Party of Canada and not the government. These so called attack ads are called this by Liberals and the media when in fact they are simply reminding Canadians what Iggy has said on different occasions in different countries. Heaven knows the Liberals reminded Harper of all of his past opinions over the last 10 years. Why is it ok for Liberals to attack the PM personally yet nobody is suppose to touch the man who would be PM? This man worked outside the country for half of his working life. He never contributed to the challenges faced by the country over that time. Just because the backroom boys in the Liberal party decided he should be appointed leader of their party it does not necessarily follow that Canadians need to accept him as PM.
The media is failing once again to do their jobs. They allow Iggy to flip flop all over the place without challenging him on anything. In fact Iggy is now speaking in tongues so that nobody knows where he stands on anything be it the coalition, asbestos, taxes, economy, EI and of course the latest where one of his MPs has been accused of human rights violations and mabe the law. So until some one decides to challenge the Count to see if he is qualified to be PM then the Conservatives have every right to raise the questions in the minds of the voters. The ads will work because Iggy is saying the words himself and I would remind the pundits and media they said the ads would not work on Dion because he was honest, intelligent and above partisan politics. The fact is the ads will have a ring of truth and Canadians will say who is this guy really.
