Harper's lawyer as Sgt. Schultz: "I did not even get up this morning!"

We don’t know what former PMO lawyer Benjamin Perrin says in them but Perrin’s e-mails will shortly be in the hands of RCMP detectives investigating the allegations of bribery, breach of trust, and fraud levelled by RCMP at Senator Mike Duffy and Nigel Wright, Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s former/fired chief of staff. We once thought there were no e-mails for Perrin told us, a la Sgt. Schultz that he knew nothing. And the PMO continued that line. Twice!

But at about 9 pm ET on Sunday night, Prime Minister Stephen Harper had his communications staff release a letter sent by his department’s bureaucrats  to the RCMP in which they ‘fess up to actually having e-mails from Perrin that the PMO and the PCO previously told the cops were deleted. We don’t know what’s in those e-mails, as I said, but they are related to this Wright-Duffy thing.

Why is this a big deal? Well, first of all, when you’re releasing correspondence you had with the cops Sunday night at 9 p.m. that can’t possibly be good news.

Also: one of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s lines all through this Wright-Duffy scandal is that a) he didn’t know and b) only Wright knew.

As a result of evidence put before a judge by RCMP investigators we certainly know that b) (above) is false and a) above might be. Lots of people — I mean, lots! — of people knew Wright was up to something with some sort of scheme to make Senator Mike Duffy’s expense scandal go away. And now — while Harper and his rock band were performing at a Jewish National Fund fundraiser in Toronto — it looks increasingly like Harper’s own lawyer knew that something was up.

Here’s what the PCO (the bureaucrats who report to the PM) sent to the RCMP today. Note the timing: In May and again in September, PCO tells the RCMP there are no Perrin e-mails. Then, when the RCMP’s Cpl. Horton puts some e-mails before a judge earlier this month suggesting otherwise, the PCO, lo and behold, finds the Perrin e-mails!
