For the record: Statement from Shawn Atleo resigning as AFN National Chief

This is terribly unsettling news. Atleo is a principled, courageous leader who recognized that the single best way to make the lives of First Nations people better was through education. Improving education systems and outcomes takes time — generations even — but Atleo was a victim to attacks from other First Nations politicians looking to score quick points. Here is the statement Atleo delivered this afternoon at the National Press Theatre in Ottawa:

STATEMENT FROM ASSEMBLY OF FIRST NATIONS NATIONAL CHIEF SHAWN A-IN-CHUT ATLEO

(Ottawa, ON) – Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo made the below statement in Ottawa, ON today.

NDP Convention: Resolution on Access to Post-Secondary Education

3-06-13 Resolution on Access to Post-Secondary Education

Submitted by the Quebec Section

BE IT RESOLVED that the NDP fully acknowledge Quebec’s exclusive jurisdiction in education, as per the Sherbrooke Declaration.

BE IT RESOLVED that the NDP reaffirm its commitment to accessible, high-quality post-secondary education.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the NDP work in solidarity with all those calling for equitable access to post-secondary education for all Canadians, without overstepping the bounds of federal jurisdiction.

There was a motion to refer this to national council for more consideration. A counted vote was held.

The motion was upheld, therefore this resolution was referred to council for more study.
