  1. Calgary may have crumbling schools; Vancouver's are both worse (many built circa 1900) and are actually physically dangerous. A majority of Vancouver's 55,000 students (and 1 in 6 total Vancouverites who use the facilities in one way or another) are at risk from building collapse in an earthquake with a majority of the 109 schools being designated as high or moderate high risk of failure in a major earthquake.
The province promised to address this; implementation is many years behind any reasonable schedule. Seattle, a comparable district, finished their seismic upgrades and rebuilds within a 10 year period, largely because their voters get it and their system allows for direct voter approval of spending items, where ours allows politicians complete free reign during their term. Often political priorities do not match those of the populace, except of course during that small window of time around an upcoming election.
