Alexa McDonough will not stand for re-election

Alexa McDonough, left, a former leader of her party, says she has run her last election as the NDP candidate in Halifax:

“In my beloved city, in the very room I officially launched my political career 29 years ago, I am here today to announce I will not be running as a candidate in the next federal election, whenever that may be,” said McDonough.

“For almost 30 years, it has been my great privilege to serve the people of Halifax, the people of Nova Scotia, and, for 13 years as a federal parliamentarian, people throughout this vast and wonderful country,” said McDonough. “With vigour, enthusiasm, and conviction, I will continue until the next election as Member of Parliament for Halifax, and as NDP critic in whatever responsibilities are entrusted to me.”

“This is a pretty emotional moment for me. I am deeply indebted to the people of this great city and province for the trust they have placed in me again and again,” said McDonough. “However, I know this is the right decision. I don’t know if I can fully explain it but I know in my heart that it’s time. It’s the right time.”

  1. Ms. McDonough has represented her party well depsite the fact it is still rooted in the 50's ideology. The constant theme about bad corporations and the poor people is tiresome to say the least when in fact the NDP policies would destroy the Canaidan economy and cause untold hardship for “ordinary. hardworking” Canadians.
Happy retirement Ms. McDonough you deserve it. One less socialist with outdated views on how the economy works leaves the national scene.

  2. Agreed. Sayonara Socialista!
Ms. McDonough has lived through many of the rough-and-tumble times of the NDP. However, as you said hollinm, the days of fast-talking the desperate into believing that their woes are the fault of a capitalistic society and that the NDP intend to make those evil capitalisic barons pay for everything, are well on their way to being over.
It looks as though she was leading people to believe that it was well nigh a crime to succeed in business, and that if you did, your pennance was to hand that money right back to the rest of Canadians because it's unfair.
Anyway, bravo Ms. McDonough, *insert golf clap*, enjoy your retirement.
