First ever "Bike Day" on Parliament Hill Wednesday

Just in from the office of John Weston, MP:

MP John Weston Hosts First Bike Day on the Hill

(May 4, 2012 – Ottawa, Ontario) – On Wednesday May 9, 2012, British Columbia MP John Weston will bring together cycling experts and enthusiasts from across the country to participate in the inaugural Bike Day on Parliament Hill. This event is in keeping with the priorities of Weston’s Parliamentary Fitness Initiative, a non-partisan movement he began in 2009 with House colleagues NDP MP Peter Stoffer, Sackville – Eastern Shore and Liberal MP Kirsty Duncan, Etobicoke North, to encourage healthier lifestyles among MP’s and Senators.

“Week to week, the Parliamentary Fitness Initiative has been a great success. It’s no exaggeration to say that we’ve been changing people’s lives. ” said Mr. Weston. “This celebration of healthy, sustainable living among our federal leaders is simply the next step toward a national day dedicated to improved health and fitness levels for all Canadians.”

“In light of the Summer Olympic Games this year, and the increasing stature of cycling on the world stage, this initiative of MP Weston’s is both current and visionary”, said Richard Wooles, Head Coach of Cycling British Columbia, and Head Track Coach, Canadian Cycling Association. “Bike Day on the Hill has the potential to move cycling forward in the minds, and more importantly in the daily routines, of Canadians who are looking for a healthier way of life”.

After presentations by the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport) and nationally recognized cycling advocates, the event will move outside for a demonstration of cycling techniques and safety procedures by local youth, aged 5 to 15, as they are guided by Ottawa Bike Club Coach Rob McClure through an obstacle course and a series of training manoeuvres. The event will conclude with a cycling tour for all interested participants through Ottawa and Gatineau, with bikes and helmets provided by Ron Kunstadt, owner of Kunstadt Sports.

  1. Once again,.an announcement is made about an event on the Hill,.and NO ONE “again” BOTHERED to include the “time of day”,..which is IMPORTANT to those who actually want to attend the event!!!

  2. Gee, went down to Parliament Hill at noon on Wednesday, very few cyclists or signs directing people to any “bike day” event. Asked several RCMP, Parliamentary security people, even a famous journalist often on the Hill, they knew nothing about it. I guess it was limited to the East Block room mentioned as I did not see anything, anywhere outside or around Parliament Hill. Too bad it was not better organized, publicized as a bike day is a great idea.

  3. I arrived at noon with my bike and didn’t see anyone else with a bike. Should have stayed for the yoga class instead.
