Ignatieff says Harper a hypocrite on committment to press freedom

Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff is in Toronto right now giving a speech to the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada, the same group that Prime Minister Stephen Harper spoke to last November:

Ignatieff's speech tonight included the following:

Let's be frank: some of our leaders say one thing about openness and transparency in opposition and another in power.

A year ago, the Prime Minister spoke to this Council. He said, and I quote:

“Our government does not tell journalists what to say or attempt to intimidate those with whom it disagrees. Instead, we believe strongly that Canadians' freedom is enhanced when journalists are free to pursue the truth, to shine light into dark corners, and to insist on the process of holding governments accountable.”

A few months later, he shut down Parliament.

His government has turned Access to Information into Denial of Information to the press and public alike.

He fought disclosure of documents relating to the Afghan detainee scandal until the Speaker ruled against him.

He leads the most secretive government in Canadian history.

Last Monday, on World Press Freedom Day, a Conservative senator told groups that work for the rights of women in the poorest countries in the world to just “shut up”-that if they dare oppose the Conservative Party, they will be silenced.

The next day, 11 groups lost their funding.

We have to do politics differently. We will not follow Mr. Harper's example. We will not tell you one thing in opposition and another in government. We will not just talk about openness, we will practice it.

  1. Iffy will never get the chance to be PM. So he is wasting his breath but he is entitled to his opinions I guess.

  2. I assume Ignatieff will also be called a hypocrite when he votes against measures to include the OLO under the lobbying rules, or when his party votes against auditing MP's expenses. I think Iggy is projecting, again.

  3. Let's see who's a hypocrite Mr. Ignatieff.
    1. Coalition good, then changed to coalition bad.
    2. Asbestos bad, then asbestos good.
    2. Torture OK, then torture not OK.
    3. Israel committed war crimes, then they didn't.
    4. AG should be allowed to review expenses, then no she shouldn't.
    5. Green Shift my idea. Green Shift Dion's idea
    6. Election if no EI changes. Oops, never mind.
    7. Mr. Harper, your time is up ( sometime before 2012 apparently).
    8. Oilsands bad, no, oilsands good. (depends what province he's giving a speech in)
This is only but a small fraction of Iggy's flip-flop persona.

  4. Oh, there's Hollingm – every where like chicken man – on every site spewing partisan crap.
Mr. Akin must know Ignatieff is telling the truth – look what happened to him because he reported a truth and a certain Fox News North couln't let any negatives come out about Harper.

  5. Let the Auditor General look at ALL the books from all our MP's then – why do you sinisterly suggest only the Liberal leader – I think it would be much more enlightening to have Mr. transparency and accountability's books to be opened for public review frankly…

  6. You don't know what you are talking about. I guess only freedom of speech is good for the Liberals heh MyThought.

  7. Let's hope that MyThought who offered his comments above reads your post.
A good start at a recap of the flip flops this feckless leader of the Liberal party has done in the last 12 months.

  8. The reason I bring up the liberal leader is because he's the one who's screaming about transparency and accountability. Just once, I would like to see Ignatieff lead by example.
This is just one example of why Ignatieff has zero credibility.
And just for the record, I wish and pray daily for a credible, sincere, Liberal leader to step up so that we can finally turf this joke of a Prime Minister.
