The GOP Debate; NDP Leader Nycole Turmel; and Michael Coren on Christopher Hitchens

Tonight on the Daily Brief on Sun News Network:

  • Republican hopefuls participated last night in the final debate before the Iowa caucus on January 3. We’ll break down the debate’s highlights — including an extended segment on the Keystone XL pipeline — with our Washington bureau chief Bryn Weese.
  • Perhaps more than other Canadian political party, the year 2011 has been one of extreme highs and extreme lows for the federal NDP. For New Democrats, the euphoria of the results from the May 2nd election gave way to the grief of Jack Layton’s death. I’ll have a session-ending interview with Layton’s temporary successor Nycole Turmel, the first time in Canada’s history that an NDP leader has conducted those year-end interviews in the offices of the Leader of the Official Opposition.
  • My colleague Michael Coren, host of The Arena on Sun News Network, is the author of Why Catholics Are Right. Probably not surprising then that he might have some points of disagreement with the author of God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. Still, that author, Christopher Hitchens, was Coren’s friend and former colleague. Hitchens died last night at the too-young age of 62. We’ll talk to Coren about the man of whom he once said “never wrote anything that was badly written.”

We’re on air at 1800 EDT and again at 2300 Pacific.
