Visibile minorities by the numbers

Sitting on the tarmac at Heathrow waiting to depart for Ottawa gave me some spare time to crunch some Stats Canada numbers that have been sitting in my electronic inbox. The calculations of percentages and rankings are mine based on the raw data in the Statscan release that came out in April on ethnic origin and visible minorities.

Statistics Canada uses the definition of visible minority that is in The Employment Equity Act and so I do, too. The Employment Equity Act defines visible minorities as 'persons, other than Aboriginal peoples, who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour.' Categories in the visible minority population variable include Chinese, South Asian, Black, Filipino, Latin American, Southeast Asian, Arab, West Asian, Korean, Japanese, Visible minority, n.i.e. ('n.i.e.' means 'not included elsewhere'), Multiple visible minority, and Not a visible minority.

  1. Thanks for posting something other than Bernier/Couillard. I used to think the media was OD-ing on Brenda Martin, and now we have Boobs'n'Bedbugs.
Some fascinating information here, particularly the fact that it seems like visible minorities are actually invisible in Quebec outside of the Montreal area. Also what is the explanation for 5% blacks in Brooks, Alberta ? Short of a farm team for the NBA, I can't think of a reason for that.

  2. The “Latin American” group is rather ridiculous. Does a Paraguayan of pure German origin, or an Argentinian of pure Italian origin qualify as a visible minority?
And many “West Asians”, e.g. lots of Iranians, are quite white (after all Iranian and Aryan are cognates).

  3. See the link above back to StatsCan's explanations on methodology. It addresses precisely this point. Bottom line: Each individual self-identifies when they fill out the census.

  4. So, should those German-Paraguayans lack honesty, they are visible minority persons.
Rather a joke, don't you think?
