CTV NewsNet 'freed' by federal regulators

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) lifted key aspects of the license for CTV Newsnet today and provided it with more money for programming.

The key paragraph from the CRTC release says:

“The licensee is no longer required to operate CTV Newsnet in a 15-minute news wheel. In addition, the licensee may broadcast a limited amount of programming drawn from category 2 (a) (Analysis and interpretation).”

Senior CTV officials had outlined why this was important earlier.

  1. The Toronto Star today carries a report by John Mackay of The Canadian Press on this issue:

    CTV news boss Robert Hurst welcomed the decision, saying it would mean more news choices for Canadian viewers.
    “What this is about is providing Canadians with better news coverage on the all-news channels,” says Hurst. “So I think this is probably a watershed day for a new beginning of the second generation of all-news channels in Canada to go forward and provide more urgent, contemporary, immediate news.” …
