With all the hunger and food security issues in the world, the UN focuses on… Canada?

My column across our papers today takes a look at the visit this week and next of a special envoy from the United Nations, the UN Rapporteur on the Right to Food. Its the first time this Rapporteur, who has just wrapped up missions to Syria and Benin, has decided to ‘investigate’ food systems in a developed country:

I’m not so sure Canada should be honoured in achieving this ‘first.’ In fact, it feels rather like there’s a nosy, do-gooder pestering one of the world’s model citizens when there are dozens of ne’er-do-well nations whose citizens would benefit from international scrutiny.

Not only that, this do-gooder reports to the United Nations Human Rights Council, a group whose legitimacy and credibility is untenable so long as that council’s current membership includes Cuba, Saudi Arabia and the nastiest human rights offender of them all, the Democratic Republic of Congo.

  1. At whose request did the UN rapporteur accept to investigate Canada?

I’d be willing to bet the invitation to visit was extended by opponents of the current government, opponents who think that by embarrassing Canada on the international stage they will increase their own credibility and advance their agenda. Sad, really.

  2. With all due Respect, I don’t know who is behind this, but Canada is not a
country where human beings die of hunger and in this Noble country of mine, Canada, there are so many good People that work in helping and giving their time for those who are in need. It is true that it’s very embarrassing on the International stage and it is really Sad. Canada is a blessed Country. Merci-Thank you

  3. The hundreds of thousand of people who visit and holiday in Cuba makes one realize just how profound the right wing QMI agency is in its hatred for this small island that has one of if not the highest degree of educate citizen in the world. If you people want a small island to pick on try England for the recent governments of this island are seem as Meccas of Rupert Murdock influencing peddling.
