On Tuesday, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Natural Resources met. And, after that meeting, our Daniel Proussalidis asked the only Liberal member on that committee, David McGuinty, what he thought about what he’d heard at that meeting. You know the results of that “Go Back to Alberta” conversation.
On Wednesday, McGuinty apologized for his post-committee comments and resigned his position as the Critic for Natural Resources for the Liberal national caucus.
On Thursday morning, the Commons’ natural resources committee met again. One of two Alberta Conservative MPs on that committee, Blaine Calkins, indicated that he would be introducing a motion for his committee to study the economic benefits of the oil and gas sector and he specifically cited McGuinty’s comments as the motive for this study.
On Thursday afternoon, we reported on Justin Trudeau’s 2010 anti-Alberta comments.
On Friday, Calkins move forward on his initiative to have the natural resources committee do a study by providing the committee clerk with the following motion. You’ll note Calkins is keen to hear from two specific witnesses:
“That the Standing Committee on Natural Resources, in light of the comments by Senior Liberal MP David McGuinty and Liberal leadership candidate Justin Trudeau, conduct hearings on the economic benefits that flow from Alberta’s energy sector across Canada. That Members of Parliament David McGuinty and Justin Trudeau are invited as witnesses to explain their comments. And that the Committee report its findings back to the House in order to ensure that all Members of Parliament and Canadians are informed of these economic benefits.”
“Que le Comité permanent des ressources naturelles, à la lumière des observations formulées par le député libéral David McGuinty et le candidat libéral à la chefferie Justin Trudeau aient tenus des audiences sur les avantages économiques qui découlent du secteur de l’énergie de l’Alberta au Canada. Que les députés David McGuinty et Justin Trudeau sont invités comme témoins pour faire part de leurs observations. Et que le comité fasse rapport de ses conclusions à la Chambre afin de s’assurer que tous les membres du Parlement et les Canadiens sont informés de ces avantages économiques.”
As the Conservatives hold the majority of votes on this committee, one assumes Calkins will succeed with this motion. Natural Resources committee next meets on Tuesday.

Harper sucks what this country needs is a new direction for the up and coming young people who are the future of this country. What some of you conservative (former Alliance party ,former Reform party)lovers choose to forget is that this country was in good shape financially under the liberal government ,our debt was no where anywhere near what it is today. I think Trudeau will make an excellent Prime minister hopefully sooner than later, he’s young with a good political background and I think he will be much more honest and truthful than Harper could ever be.
Chretien paid off the deficit that Mulroney ignored. Now we are back in the hole. Guess why?
Anything is worth milking for political points — right Steve? The Cons are still taking credit for the economic base laid by the Chretien – Martin team that put Canada in a position to weather the wall street caused financial melt-down.
Why is no-one talking about Harper’s old anti-Canada “fence around Alberta” rhetoric? Maybe because only the Cons exploit everything for political points no matter how divisive the outcome.
I would like to point out to thebiggreenlie and Constantboo that all three major parties in Canada fall left of centre when compared to the Americans and all three fall pretty much center when compared to the Europeans. Stop fooling yourself into thinking there is a massive diverging difference in the Cons/Libs/NDP. They will all spend tons of money and make shady back room deals and go out and say and do stupid things. That is what political parties do. But in saying that the Left in Canada (NDP/Libs) will make our nation into a commie land you are either uneducated in politics, a fear mongered or just spewing retarded things because the internet protects your real identity.
